Dental Bridges in Westwood
As humans age, the teeth, gums, and jawbone naturally weaken. If oral hygiene is neglected, then individuals can often wind up losing multiple teeth, leaving large gaps in the smile. While this can leave people with less than pleasing aesthetics, it can also result in serious problems for the shape of the face and overall jawbone wellness. Over time, the gums and jawbone will weaken and can start to deteriorate.
To help our patients who are missing multiple teeth avoid unpleasant outcomes, Starry Dental offers the creation and installation of dental bridges.
What is a Dental Bridge?
At its core, a dental bridge is multiple synthetic teeth that are connected and installed in the mouth using a bridgework of wires or ceramic. Bridges can be made from a variety of materials, including metal, ceramic, or composite resin. There are also multiple types of bridges, including fixed and implant-supported.
Fixed
A fixed bridge is one that is installed using teeth that are around the gap where a tooth is missing. The nearby teeth are molded and shaped so crowns can be slipped over the healthy root and pulp. These crowns are connected to the synthetic tooth, which can sit comfortably on the gums and be used like a regular tooth. Because this fixed bridge is cemented in place, it is long-lasting and durable. Sometimes the gum underneath will need to be smoothed to prepare it.
The process of getting a fixed bridge takes two appointments. During the first, the teeth and gums are prepared, and a mold is taken to make the crowns and synthetic tooth. It is installed during the second appointment.
Implant-Supported
An implant-supported bridge is held in place using one or more dental implants. These are titanium roots that are drilled through the gum and into the jawbone. They have a screw component on top of the root that is visible over the gum. The bridge will be screwed into the implants and is designed to be permanent. Like a fixed bridge, an implant-supported option will take two or even three appointments to be fitted properly.
